No Need to Go Far! Discover These Hidden Gems in Budapest

Budapest is known for numerous tourist attractions that draw crowds year after year.

But if you feel like you’ve already checked off every must-see spot in Budapest, join the Y Generation Student Union team and let’s explore the hidden treasures of the capital together!

Gül Baba Street

Gül Baba Street is located near the Budai Irgalmasrendi Hospital, just a few steps away from the bustling Margit Boulevard. It’s not only one of the few remaining medieval residential streets in Buda but also one of the steepest in the city. This winding little street leads to Gül Baba's tomb, a monument commemorating the Turkish occupation. Renovated in 2018, the area around the tomb was completely redesigned, the rose garden expanded, and numerous benches were added. Although the renovation has given it a more modern appearance, the Turkish memorial site remains a charming spot in the Rózsadomb area.

House of Hungarian Art Nouveau

It’s unique not only in Budapest but worldwide to have a museum dedicated solely to one artistic style. The House of Hungarian Art Nouveau, spanning around 600 square meters, showcases authentic furniture, decorative objects, paintings, and everyday items from the early 20th century. The museum is open Monday to Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM. Crossing its threshold, you can immerse yourself in the ambiance of the peaceful Hungarian turn of the century.

Budapest Botanical Garden

The Budapest Botanical Garden, or Füvészkert, is Hungary's first botanical garden, which has operated as a special educational unit of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in the 8th district of Budapest since 2006, located at 25 Illés Street. Founded in 1771, its establishment is linked to the founding of the medical faculty of the University of Nagyszombat. The garden's main goals were to research native flora and support medical and pharmaceutical education. After several relocations, it has been open at its current location since 1847. Its popularity is partly due to its appearance in Ferenc Molnár’s novel The Paul Street Boys, where the garden’s palm house serves as a hiding place for Ernő Nemecsek and his friends. The garden’s highlights include the Victoria House, home to the country's first and long-time only giant water lily, the over 150-year-old ginkgo trees, and a collection of orchids and hundreds of cactus species.

Feneketlen Lake

Though its name might sound mysterious, the origin of Feneketlen Lake is less magical: it was formed in 1877 when workers at the brick factory dug a clay pit and hit a water flow that filled the pit. Surrounded by a park in the 11th district, you can comfortably walk around the lake on established paths. In 1959, the Budai Parkszínpad opened (initially named after Béla Bartók), hosting numerous theater performances and concerts. The park is not only a favorite spot for entertainment seekers but also for families with young children, with its renovated playground and a statue of a sitting bear that even residents from distant districts visit.

Szimpla Kert – The Cult of Ruin Pubs in Budapest

If there's one place in Budapest you shouldn’t miss on a city tour, Szimpla Kert is definitely at the top of the list: this uniquely atmospheric venue is the pioneer of ruin pubs in Pest, operating since 2004 at its current location, 14 Kazinczy Street. According to them: "Szimpla operates to find out whether it’s possible to finance niche culture on a market basis, survive seemingly hopeless construction projects, run a balanced kitchen, screen self-distributed films in a garden cinema, and organize animation film festivals.” Just imagine a bar where a bicycle hangs from the ceiling, where you can play the piano while sitting on a tree trunk, and sip your drink from a bathtub turned into a couch…
